The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program honors the excellence of Cornell undergraduates, as well as the high school and university faculty members who have contributed to their lives. The university wishes to acknowledge the community of teaching not only for conveying knowledge to students but also for inspiring them. This program was created by Philip Merrill ’55 and is made possible by the generous funding of the Merrill Foundation. Read Vice President Susan H. Murhpy's tribute to Phillip Merrill.

Merrill Presidential Scholars are graduating Cornell seniors who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement, strong leadership ability, and the potential for contributing to society. Every spring semester, the deans of Cornell’s 7 undergraduate colleges select 36 scholars, representing approximately 1 percent of graduating seniors, for this honor.

“I have received several awards over the years, but this will rank as number one since I received it from one of my students. What more can a teacher ask for?!”

— an honored high school teacher

Each student recognizes a high school teacher who most inspired his or her scholastic development and a Cornell faculty member who most significantly contributed to his or her college experience. At the end of the semester, the scholars, along with their teachers and professors, are honored at a convocation hosted by Cornell’s president and attended by the college deans. The high school teachers come to campus as guests of the university to participate in this two-day event, some traveling from as far away as Europe and Asia. To show appreciation for their efforts and excellence as educators, special events are planned for them, ensuring that their visit is meaningful, enjoyable, and memorable.

star Elizabeth Jean Marcil

Elizabeth Jean Marcil is a chemical and biomolecular engineering major in the College of Engineering. Elizabeth has received the Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award, the John McMullen Dean’s Scholarship, the James W. Spencer Scholarship, and the Byron W. Saunders Scholarship for outstanding academic performance. In her research she developed a phase plane model and formulated dynamical equations for an electro-osmotic droplet switch. She is the president of the Cornell chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, a professional chemistry fraternity. While in the Cornell Co-op program she helped design a computer simulation study to test for drug interactions in pharmacokinetic studies for Merck & Co. After graduation Elizabeth will pursue a master’s degree in chemical engineering focusing on engineering management, business development, and applied math.
